Kaleidoscopic Heritage
We were delighted to work alongside artist Andy Welland with a project curated by Art Contact Ltd, to bring a new large-scale artwork to the historic Old Town Hall in Bromley.
With the building’s rich history and distinctive architectural character, the artwork needed to feel at home within the space. The aim was to create something contemporary that complemented the existing architecture, respecting its heritage without overpowering the courtyard or feeling out of place.
Inspired by the building’s historic leaded-glass windows, Andy’s design reinterprets elements of its visual heritage through a contemporary geometric language. Symmetry, organic forms, botanical details and repeating patterns come together to create a sense of movement across the walls. Shapes are mirrored, rotated and layered to create a kaleidoscopic effect, revealing new details as you move through the courtyard.
The colour palette was developed in response to the wider character of the building, drawing from its branding and interior and exterior design, as well as the rosemary and lavender planting within the courtyard. These softer, natural tones help connect the artwork to its surroundings, allowing the design to feel like a considered part of the space.
Designed specifically for the courtyard, the composition follows the curve and proportions of the wall. Bringing the intricate design to life required careful planning and preparation, with close attention to detail throughout the installation to ensure the finished artwork remained true to Andy’s original vision.
The result is a contemporary addition to the Old Town Hall that celebrates the building’s heritage while bringing a fresh perspective to the space.
“The finished artwork looks deceptively simple, but translating sharp geometric forms across curved walls, changing elevations and sloping ground levels presented a complex technical challenge. The London Mural Company team were brilliant partners throughout the process, highly adapt at problem-solving and managing production on site while retaining the precision and intent of the original artwork. I’m incredibly pleased with the finished piece, and it’s been fantastic to see that enthusiasm shared by the client too.”
